I think first of all that we should thank K.S. for all of the hard work he has done to get this site together. The changes he has made really will make a difference once everyone begins to add to the site.
There are so many stories and memories of KCA that I have. Many of them are from athletics while others come from just some of the fun events / activities going on. Grace Weimer talked about the Drop In. I am sure many of us could drop a few lines about the Drop In, some of it good too. J
I think before I start remembering all of the times with classmates and those in school around my age, I would first say how I looked up to all of the upperclassmen from the time I was in 6th and 7th grade. I remember that awesome football and soccer team during 1974-75 in which Andy Linton, Bill Goette, Greg Young, Paul Folta, and so many more just dominated the competition. I was a 5th grader at SFS and was invited to Field Day at KCA since I was to come to school there the next day. I rode one of the Kosok buses by myself (my young sons can’t do that on Grayhound here in the states these days) and I had the time of my life. What I remember most was watching KCA play Seoul American in soccer with Goette in the goal. As an 11-year old, those guys probably looked bigger and better than they actually were. Well, bigger anyway. That was a good team.
And how about Andy Linton’s long hair when he was a senior
playing quarterback. He was so very
good. I remember eating lunch on
the base in
That was common for KCA students though. Polite, thoughtful, fun, FAMILY.
I had a lot of respect for the upperclassmen as I was in junior high and 9th grade, looking up to the boys and girls who were ahead of me. I could just rattle off the names of the folks who I still remember fondly.
Jon Folta was an incredible athlete back in 75-76 who really should be listed among the greats at KCA. Bobby Patton could jump out of the gym and started at center as a freshman on the varsity basketball team. Jon Linton carried the soccer team along with some other great players for years there since he started so young on the varsity.
Andy Schowengerdt, Rick Grant, Lynn Harkins, Debbie Wiggs, Toni Wiggs, Christine Seel, Luisa Chu, Philip Chu, Tim Grubb, Steve Hunt…… I could go on and on about people that I looked up to for various reasons.
While I had a fondness for many teachers, some that stand out to me now (and I can list a few more at a different time) include Grace Kingsbury, Bill Goette, Norma Nichols, Jim Bundrant and so many others. Was there anyone who had as much Bible Archeological knowledge as Virginia Somerville?
I remember a time for World Religions that our class taught by Mr. Mullinax invited some LDS (Mormon) missionaries to come in for a discussion (Terry White and I were talking about that recently). Lets just say that Mr. Mullinax taught us so well that the Mormon missionaries never came back for another discussion. Perhaps we should have built a relationship first. Nah, that was more fun.
Seriously, so many teachers gave of themselves and impacted so many lives.
How about the train and bus trips for sports and for the
Brain Bowl? I remember sleeping in
sleeping bags when we visited
Well, I think that I will try to do a regular post each week about different memories so check back regularly.
Lea Ray, Jon Linton, Mike Swedenburg, Debbie Wiggs, and others looked after me as a 7th and 8th grader. Thanks folks!
Terry White, Steve Schowengerdt, Phil Peacock, Jon Sneller, Sam Folta, Terry Stella, Lee Nichols, jr., Jim Ritchie and others formed a nucleus in my later years at KCA. Of course we were able to share those times with wonderful girl classmates and underclassmen: Debs (Harkins), Ruth Ann (Lee) Somerville, Bobbie, Carol, Sissel, Michelle Molchan, Lydia Chu, Melanie M., Sherry W., Melody, Lynn N., Melinda, and so many others……
Take care.
